Physiotherapists I Work With in Essex & Suffolk
Patients frequently ask me, “Can you recommend a good physiotherapist near me?”
Physiotherapy is an important part of treating many foot and ankle problems. Good rehabilitation can sometimes help avoid surgery altogether and, when an operation is necessary, the quality of rehabilitation afterwards can be an important part of achieving the best possible recovery.
Over many years working as a specialist foot and ankle surgeon, I have worked with physiotherapists across Essex and Suffolk. The clinicians and practices below are people with whom I have developed particularly good working relationships through sharing the care of patients.
I value physiotherapists who communicate well, understand the particular requirements of foot and ankle rehabilitation and adapt rehabilitation to the individual rather than simply following a generic protocol. Just as importantly, I listen to what my patients tell me about their experience.
The physiotherapists listed here are people and practices with whom my own experience of collaborative working has been particularly good and from whom I have received consistently positive feedback from patients.
You certainly do not have to use one of these physiotherapists. If you already have a physiotherapist whom you know and trust, I am very happy to work with them.
Find a Physiotherapist I Work With Near You
The map below shows physiotherapists and rehabilitation practices with whom I work across Colchester, North Essex, the Tendring coast, Halstead, Sudbury, Ipswich and East Suffolk. Select a location to find a physiotherapist convenient to where you live or work.
Colchester
Reflex-18 — Stanway, Colchester
Josh Congdon
I have a particularly close working relationship with Josh Congdon and the team at Reflex-18, where I also see patients as part of the wider multidisciplinary team. I am also a co-owner of Reflex-18, and therefore have a direct professional and business relationship with the clinic.
Josh has a strong interest in lower-limb rehabilitation and brings a practical, evidence-based approach to recovery. I particularly value the emphasis at Reflex-18 on restoring function and measuring progress rather than simply treating symptoms.
This works extremely well when we are making decisions about progression following foot and ankle injury or surgery and, particularly, when deciding when someone is ready to return to running or sport.
I have shared many patients with Josh and the team and have found communication between us excellent. This has been reinforced by consistently positive feedback from patients regarding their treatment and rehabilitation.
Particularly convenient for: Colchester, Stanway and surrounding North Essex.
Bodyworks Physiotherapy — Severalls / Highwoods, Colchester
I have worked with the team at Bodyworks Physiotherapy for many years and have been consistently impressed by their approach to patients.
They combine physiotherapy with exercise-based rehabilitation and have considerable experience treating musculoskeletal problems, including foot and ankle conditions, sports injuries and rehabilitation following surgery.
I particularly value physiotherapists who recognise when a patient’s recovery is not progressing as expected and communicate with me rather than simply continuing the same treatment. My experience of working with Bodyworks has been very good in this respect.
Patients I have referred or shared with the team have also repeatedly reported a positive experience of their treatment and rehabilitation.
Particularly convenient for: Colchester, Highwoods, Severalls and surrounding North Essex.
Tendring & the Essex Coast
Coastal Physiotherapy — Frinton-on-Sea
Fleur Oakley-Pugh
I have worked with Fleur Oakley-Pugh at Coastal Physiotherapy and have always been impressed by her thoughtful approach to foot and ankle rehabilitation.
Fleur has a particular professional interest in biomechanics and foot conditions, which can be extremely useful when we are jointly managing some of the more complex foot and ankle problems.
She understands that successful rehabilitation often requires looking beyond simply the point at which somebody experiences pain and considering movement, strength, biomechanics and the demands that the individual patient ultimately wishes to place upon their foot or ankle.
My experience of working with Fleur has been excellent, and this has been reinforced by very positive feedback from patients whom we have looked after together.
Particularly convenient for: Frinton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, Clacton-on-Sea and the wider Tendring area.
Mersea & South Colchester
Tim Humphries Physiotherapy — West Mersea
Tim Humphries
I have worked with Tim Humphries for many years and have developed an excellent working relationship with him in the management and rehabilitation of foot and ankle conditions.
Tim has considerable experience in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and understands the particular challenges of rehabilitation following foot and ankle injury and surgery. I value his pragmatic approach — progressing rehabilitation according to how the individual patient is recovering rather than simply according to a predetermined timetable.
Good communication between surgeon and physiotherapist becomes particularly important when recovery does not follow the expected course. Tim and I are able to communicate directly when necessary, allowing rehabilitation to be adjusted or a patient reviewed if there are concerns.
I have received consistently positive feedback from patients who have undertaken their rehabilitation with Tim.
Particularly convenient for: West Mersea, Mersea Island, Abberton, Peldon and south Colchester.
Halstead & Mid Essex
Halstead Physiotherapy Clinic — Halstead
Rebecca Lane
I have known and worked with Rebecca Lane and Halstead Physiotherapy Clinic over many years.
Rebecca is a very experienced physiotherapist and I particularly value her sensible and considered approach to patients with musculoskeletal problems and those recovering following surgery.
One of the important skills in postoperative rehabilitation is knowing both when to protect a recovering foot or ankle and when it is appropriate to start challenging it again. Rebecca communicates well when there are concerns and, equally importantly, gives patients confidence to progress when it is safe to do so.
Patients whom we have jointly looked after have consistently spoken very positively about the treatment and support they have received.
Particularly convenient for: Halstead, Earls Colne, Coggeshall and surrounding Mid-Essex.
Sudbury & the Essex/Suffolk Border
Physio Motive — Sudbury
Bradie Clarke
Physio Motive provides an excellent physiotherapy and rehabilitation option for patients around Sudbury and the Essex/Suffolk border.
I have been particularly impressed by their modern, rehabilitation-focused approach. The aim of successful rehabilitation should ultimately extend beyond simply reducing pain towards restoring movement, strength, confidence and function.
My experience of sharing patients with the team has been very positive, as has the feedback I receive from patients.
This approach can be particularly valuable for active patients for whom the endpoint of treatment is not simply comfortable everyday walking but returning confidently to exercise, running or sport.
Particularly convenient for: Sudbury and surrounding areas of South Suffolk and North Essex.
Ipswich, Martlesham & East Suffolk
Alpha Physiotherapy — Martlesham
I have developed a good working relationship with Alpha Physiotherapy at Martlesham for patients living around Ipswich, Kesgrave, Martlesham and Woodbridge.
I have found their approach professional, sensible and focused on achieving meaningful functional recovery rather than simply treating symptoms.
This is particularly important following foot and ankle surgery, where rehabilitation needs to evolve as healing progresses. The physiotherapist needs to understand what has been done, what tissues still require protection and when movement, strengthening and more demanding activity can safely be introduced.
The feedback I have received from patients treated at Alpha Physiotherapy has been consistently positive, and I am very comfortable working collaboratively with their team when patients wish to undertake their rehabilitation closer to home.
Particularly convenient for: Martlesham, Kesgrave, Woodbridge, East Ipswich and East Suffolk.
SportsMed East — Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich
David Williams
I have worked with David Williams at SportsMed East and particularly value his sports medicine and rehabilitation approach.
For active patients, successful treatment involves considerably more than becoming pain-free. Strength, balance, proprioception, confidence and ultimately the particular physical demands of the patient’s chosen activity or sport all need to be considered before returning to unrestricted activity.
I have found David’s approach to these issues excellent. He understands the importance of progressing rehabilitation towards meaningful functional goals rather than simply treating symptoms.
Communication when we are jointly managing a patient has been very good, and this has been reflected in the positive feedback I have received from patients who have undergone their rehabilitation with him.
Particularly convenient for: Ipswich, Rushmere St Andrew and surrounding East Suffolk.
Why Physiotherapy Matters After Foot & Ankle Surgery
Different operations require very different approaches to rehabilitation.
Following an Achilles tendon repair, for example, rehabilitation progressively moves from protecting the repair towards restoring ankle movement, normal walking and calf strength.
Patients undergoing surgery for chronic insertional Achilles problems may require a prolonged period of progressive strengthening, while physiotherapy and rehabilitation can also be particularly important following flat-foot reconstruction, ankle ligament reconstruction, tendon surgery, ankle fractures and many sports-related foot and ankle procedures.
Following bunion surgery, formal physiotherapy is not routinely necessary for everybody, although it can be helpful when movement, gait, swelling or return to activity are not progressing as expected.
The rehabilitation programme therefore needs to reflect the operation you have actually had, rather than simply the diagnosis written on the referral.
Working With Your Own Physiotherapist
You certainly do not have to see one of the physiotherapists on this page.
If you already have a physiotherapist whom you know and trust, I am very happy to work with them.
Where appropriate, I can provide information about the procedure you have undergone and any particular restrictions regarding weight-bearing, movement or strengthening. I am also happy for your physiotherapist to contact me if there are questions or concerns about your progress.
The practices on this page are included because patients frequently ask me, “Can you recommend a physiotherapist near me?”
These are physiotherapists and practices across Essex and Suffolk with whom I have personally had particularly good experiences of collaborative working and from whom my patients have reported positive experiences.
Ultimately, I believe the best rehabilitation occurs when patient, physiotherapist and surgeon are all working towards the same goal.
Returning to Activity and Sport
Recovery does not necessarily finish when an operation has healed.
For many patients, the next objective is rebuilding strength, balance, confidence and the ability to return safely to work, exercise or sport.
You can read more about this aspect of recovery in my Return to Peak Performance information.
